Following the contestation of the liberal world order, Archaya once argued that it is now time for a multiplex world order arguing that we are in a post-hegemonic phase where there is a fragmentation or rather ‘pluralisation of actors, ideas and process’. Like going to a multiplex theater, various models are on display and the European 'model' is not the norm anymore but rather is likely to become the 'exception' if once look at the rise of the BRICS. Europe is also quite inaudible when it comes to the Hamas-Israel and wider Middle East conflicts, and has yet to demonstrate how its strategic autonomy can help to position itself in Russia's war on Ukraine. It is also increasingly contested internally with the rise of populism and illiberal migration policies that are being devised. This event questions what kind of global actor can the EU be in the near to medium term future, drawing from the research on resilience, adaptation and agility of the EU in times of crisis.

You are warmly invited to listen to the debate which will gather Sabine Saurugger, Professor and Director of Sciences Po Grenoble, Sarah Wolff, Professor in International Studies and Global Politics at Leiden University and Daniel Thomas, Professor in International Relations at Leiden University.

This event will be moderated by Professor Isabelle Duijvesteijn, Chair of the BAIS.

Drinks will be offered at the end of the talk at Schlemmer (Lange Houtstraat 17).
