It is widely assumed that the Qur’an provides for two instances of revocable divorce (“divorce is twice,” Q 2:229) followed by one instance of irrevocable divorce (“released in a good way,” Q 2:229; or “if he divorces her,” Q 2:230). This presentation will place the assumption of a third divorce within the wider context of the Qur’an’s statements on marital discord, resolution, and dissolution, which encompass recalcitrance, neglect, constraint, the replacement of one wife with another, and vows of sexual renunciation, as well as divorce itself. The Qur’anic divorce tableaux will then be contrasted with divorce regulations in late antique Roman, rabbinic, and Sasanian law.
