Film Screening: The Shadow of the West

"The Shadow of the West (1982)" stands out as a rare gem among Edward Said's documentary films. This production was featured as part of the comprehensive series "The Arabs - A Living History," developed for PBS. Notably, it was among the few, if not the sole, documentary by Said permitted to air in the United States. In this film, Said, a distinguished Palestinian scholar, delves into Western perceptions of the Arab world, tracing their roots back to influences such as the Crusades, Hollywood, and imperialism. Said perceives the plight of Palestinians as a consequence of extensive Western intervention throughout history.
