Kayhan Valadbaygi
In Capitalism in Contemporary Iran: Capital Accumulation, State Formation and Geopolitics (Manchester University Press, 2024), Kayhan Valadbaygi traces the changes in the patterns of capital accumulation and class and state formation in Iran during the global neoliberal era. It underlines the inner connections between Iran’s contemporary development, state structure, ongoing sociopolitical transformations, and geopolitical tensions with the West.
In so doing, it highlights the need to analyse these issues in the context of motions and tendencies of global capitalism and resulting geopolitics. The book demonstrates how Iranian neoliberalisation has spawned fresh class dynamics, leading to a fundamental restructuring of the ruling and working classes, all while exerting significant influence on state form and foreign policy.
Following Valadbaygi’s presentation of his book, Ladan Rahbari (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, University of Amsterdam) and Vineet Thakur (Institute of History, Leiden University) will lead the discussion.
This event is co-organized with L-PEG
