Beyond “Ground Truth”: An Anthropology of AI at the Limits of Scientific Knowledge
Novel AI techniques are transforming the practice of contemporary science. The rapid adoption of AI is introducing methodological transformations in diverse fields of knowledge, and generating controversies about the construction of AI models and the interpretation of results. This presentation explores how researchers are renegotiating what counts as a scientific “proof” as they adapt to unprecedented modes of deduction, observation, and prediction enabled by AI. It offers illustrations from three different fields: automated theorem proving, black hole imaging, and extreme climate modeling.
