Deleuze and Guattari, Ecological Thinkers?
The radical separation of culture from nature in Western philosophical tradition has been a central element of criticism for many ecological thinkers. To replace the metaphysics of subjectivity that relies on this separation, ecological thought has made frequent use of relational ontologies. Even though the oeuvre of Deleuze and Guattari has a strong ecological penchant, and creatively interacts with major ecological concepts, the connection between the Deleuzoguattarian relational ontology and ecology is a relatively new subject of study. In this presentation, I aim to demonstrate how this ontology not only fits well with ecological thinking but can actually be a generous resource for a philosophy of nature. To this aim, the theory of becoming in A Thousand Plateaus and the three ecological registers in The Three Ecologies of Guattari will be outlined. Then, how the first provides the metaphysical background for the pragmatic-political project of the second will be demonstrated. Finally, why relational ontology has a normative value for ecological thinking will be discussed.
All are welcome!
