This workshop encourages Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to make their voices heard in public debates about science. ECRs will meet scientists who have engaged with the media, learn from respected science journalists, hear from policymakers on how to inform policy and talk about involving the public in communicating research with public engagement experts.
Panel 1: Researchers and engagement
A panel of researchers will share their experiences of engaging with the media, public, and policy worlds. They will discuss why researchers should care about how evidence is used and reported on and share their advice and top tips for helping researchers to work with policy and media and to engage with the public.
Dr. Cristina del Real
Dr. Cristina Del-Real is an Assistant Professor in Cyber Crisis at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University.
Professor Astrid Groot
Astrid Groot is a Professor and Department Head of Evolutionary and Population Biology at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics at the University of Amsterdam.
Panel 2: What journalists are looking for
A panel of journalists and press officers will explain how they approach stories, balance the need for news and entertainment with reporting science and evidence, and deal with accusations of polarising debates and misrepresenting the facts.
Marieke Epping
Marieke Epping is the science communications adviser of Leiden University. She works at the central communications department (Strategic Communications and Marketing), so she covers research from all seven faculties.
Jean-Paul Keulen

Since September 2021, he has been a freelance science journalist for various newspapers, magazines and websites, final editor, coordinator and guest lecturer.
Panel 3: What policymakers are looking for
A panel of policymakers and academics involved in policy will explain how evidence is used in policy, how they balance facts and values, and how they deal with a lack of good evidence, trade-offs, polarised debates and accusations of non-evidence based policy.
