Psychologist B.F. Skinner thought that most if not all of behavior was the result of an animal exploring its environment and learning the consequences of its actions. This principle, known as operant conditioning or reinforcement learning, has made its way into computer science mostly through the early work of Marvin Minsky, allowing computers to do the same trial-and-error learning. Now, disciplines ranging from psychology to linguistics to computer science are using reinforcement learning to solve all kinds of problems. This SAILS mini symposium gives the floor to colleagues from different SAILS faculties who will be talking about the way they use reinforcement learning in their work. We will end with a panel session discussing the future of reinforcement learning and how the various flavors of reinforcement learning can inform each other.
