So far, we have been looking at old-fashioned, rather conservative (traditional) dialects (in the 19th & 20th Centuries), which very rarely people speak nowadays. What we see in the linguistic atlases barely resembles the current dialect landscape. So what happened since the late 19th century? Were the dialects all converging towards the Standard? What kind of processes were involved in Standardisation? What do we mean by ‘vertical’ variation? What are the ‘intermediate’ varieties? In this workshop, we shall look at some processes in dialect change, as well as the formation of ‘intermediate’ varieties.
