Though our everyday behavior looks sophisticated and unpredictable, spatiotemporal regularities exist in different human phenomena, ranging from social interaction to urban phenomena such as crime and mobility. In this talk, I discuss how computer science helps us understand these regularities and uncover their underlying mechanisms, with a specific focus on urban crime and human dynamics. In the first part of the talk, I delve into crime science and explore regularities in the growth, structure, and dynamics of crime. In the second part, I demonstrate how computational modeling can reveal the mechanisms behind inequality in social gatherings. I also discuss unresolved open questions leading to future research directions.
