The works on linguistic reconstruction are usually focused on languages with a long written tradition (e.g. Indo-European languages), or the history of the standard languages. What about dialects? For a lot of dialects, our source of reconstruction come from dialect survey data – they offer us more insight into the history of regional non-standard varieties (the goal of conducting dialect survey was to collect rather non-exogenously-influenced dialects for historical studies). There are several types of dialect data which we can use for historical reconstruction, and we will look at a few of them together with hands on experience in linguistic reconstruction.
