This talk will discuss illustrated Safavid manuscripts from 16th century Shiraz, which was a provincial center, but had been an important manuscript production center from at least the fourteenth century. During the 16th century Shiraz manuscripts, which were stylistically easily identifiable, outnumbered those from all other centers combined. Shiraz manuscripts lack patrons’ names and thus were made to be sold or presented to an unknown recipient rather than on commission, and can be considered as commercial manuscripts, but especially from the mid-century onwards they were deliberately made to resemble their royal counterparts, and were intended for consumption by courtly circles.
