Every year the European Parliament awards its annual Sakharov prize, honouring individuals or groups who have dedicated their lives to defence of human rights and freedom of thought. For the European Parliament, it an occasion to take leadership in EU’s human rights promotion policy. For members of the parliamentary groups it is also an occasion to make a political statement through their choice of candidates.

Find out what is at stake in selecting the person to be honoured by the EP’s annual prize. During the seminar, we will be joined by MEP Peter van Dalen from the EP’s human rights committee who will present the background and the wider context of the prize and answer your questions about the role of the EP in human rights promotion. We will combine his presentation with a student debate to give you a first-hand experience of what considerations go into proposing and selecting the candidate.

The seminar and the debate will take place on the premises of the European Parliament office in the Netherlands. The event will be followed up by refreshments.
