The Young Alumni Network organizes an interactive lecture on Thursday 21 April 2022: 'How to fact-check fake news', followed by networking drinks! All young and older alumni are welcome.

Everyone is now using the term 'fake news' all the time, but we will only be doing that for a few years. But what exactly is 'fake news'? And what types are there? That's what this evening is about. And more importantly, it will also be about how to expose 'fake news'. What tricks and tools are there that you can also apply yourself? Fact checkers Alexander Pleijter and Leon Pauw will give an interactive presentation about this.

In 2009, Alexander Pleijter and his colleague Peter Burger devised Nieuwscheckers, the fact-checking project of Leiden University. At the moment they still run Nieuwscheckers together and it is their ambition to grow into the fact-checking center of the Netherlands. Leon Pauw is an intern at Nieuwscheckers and is very adept at using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) to fact-check photos and videos of the war in Ukraine, for example. He will demonstrate how that works on Thursday 21 April. After this evening you can undoubtedly also work with it to investigate and refute fake news.
