Reports on discrimination against cultural, religious or ethnic groups in the Netherlands often exclude anti-Asian racism, even though reported cases of anti-Asian racism have increased significantly, especially since the corona pandemic. How is ‘Asian’ defined in media and public discourse? What is the impact of the absence of Asians as a category in research and discussions of racism?
In this panel, Hui-Hui Pan (Pan Asian Collective) and Jasmijn Rana (Leiden University) explore these questions, with the goal to foster a discussion which includes Asians in research and discussions of racism.
This will include a presentation of an exploratory research on how and to what extent ‘Asians’ are represented in Dutch media. Hui-Hui Pan will lay out the first results and challenges in research design when, if and how to include ‘Asians’ into representation research.
