As one of the first works of fiction in the English language to portray African village life from an African perspective, Things Fall Apart represents the vanguard of an effort to reclaim the African story from the colonial pen. For this reading group we examine a classic work by well-known Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. None of us (presumably!) come as experts, nor indeed as literary critics. Rather, we approach this literary work in a general manner, exploring its contours as well as the way in which it pushes us to reflect on themes relevant to the study of international relations: the colonial experience, the ambiguities and politics of cultural groups and their intertwining, the local as a microcosm and manifestation of global developments.
Culture and Politics Event Series
The Culture and Politics Event Series serves to expose students to further themes related to their specialisation as well as to possible future career opportunities for which their specialisation provides required knowledge and skills.
