Unified in diversity, or simply divided: values and the future of the EU
We can meet up live again! We are grateful to the European Banking Federation for hosting our Alumni in Brussels Event 2022. We have organized an academic debate from interesting points of view for you on the values, the past, the present and the future of the EU:
Our panel of speakers will debate the question of the future of the EU through a conversation about EU-ropean values and the extent to which they underpin the very identity of the EU and its member states, and what they mean for how others perceive the EU.
Speakers are:
Professor dr. mr. Maurits Berger:
Prof.dr. Maurits S. Berger, LLM (1964) is a lawyer and Arabist. He holds the Sultan of Oman chair of Islam and the West at Leiden University Centre for the Study of Religion (LUCSoR) and is a senior research associate with the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague. He has worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam, and as a researcher and journalist in Cairo and Damascus.
Professor dr. mr. Armin Cuyvers:
Armin Cuvyers is full Professor of European Law at the Europa Instituut of Leiden University, where he holds the chair in EU Constitutional Law and Comparative Regional Integration. He also is the director of CompaRe, the Leiden Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Comparative Regional Integration and the faculty teaching director for all legal Masters. His research focusses on European constitutional law, sovereignty, Brexit, (con)federalism and monetary integration, often in a comparative perspective and in collaboration with social psychologists to integrate their empirical insights into EU law.
Dr. Maxine David:
Dr. Maxine David is a Lecturer in European Studies at Leiden University. She is a Foreign Policy analyst, specialising in EU-Russia-US relations. She is co-editor and contributing author to The Routledge Handbook of EU-Russia Relations.
